Building Better Hunters

Starting horses through proper groundwork, and “rehabbing” the vices of mature show horses.

This 6 week program that is based on the Clinton Anderson method consists of groundwork and riding. During the ground work all horses complete a series of desensitizing exercises, including obstacles. Once the riding begins, we also complete these exercises while mounted and ride over/through various types of obstacles.

Horses work 6 days a week, beginning in the round pen, advancing to the arena, open fields, and trails. All horses advance to all areas of riding and most travel to other facilities for schooling days. All horses will walk, trot, and canter on a loose rein, regardless of environment, learn to perform basic lateral movements, and will start the basics of some collection at the end of the fundamental level.

Some other things that are not listed on the fundamentals poster: the hobbling series, various forms of tying, and general manners around the barn such as bathing or farrier.

The program is a minimum of 8 weeks. If I feel that the horse is not ready after 8 weeks, I will advise the owner that it’s best to keep the horse in the program until I feel that they have properly “graduated” (all horses progress at different paces). The cost of their stay with me (boarding + training) is $1,500/mo (fifteen-hundred dollars per month). Owner provides feed, and pays for farrier and any vet bills.
